As drone proliferate, both clueless operators and those with criminal intent pose a threat to airports and other critical infrastructure. In April 2019, more than a thousand flights were delayed or cancelled out of London’s Gatwick Airport due to drone sightings close to the runway, demonstrating the havoc that can be wreaked by off-the-shelf drones without effective systems to detect and potentially destroy these little quadcopters.

John talks with business and homeland security editor Cal Biesecker on progress across the federal government on testing and procuring counter-drone systems that can be deployed in crowded environments and establishing CONOPS to guide authority and decision-making. Also included are comments from Angela Stubblefield, one of the FAA’s leads on counter-drone activities, as well as a number of companies with counter-UAS systems on the market.
